Building a Brand in Japan

A $16B Division of a Fortune 50 Aerospace & Defense Company

The Issue
The company was trying to establish a brand presence in Japan. Even though it had been doing business in that country for 60 years, with the exception of sporadic bursts of activities around major trade shows, the company had a low profile inside Japan’s defense ecosystem.

The Challenge
The company’s primary competitor was highly visible in the defense trade space. The company had already lost out on a major contract, in part because of its lack of brand presence. It needed to turn the tide.

The Opportunity
After conducting extensive market research, we determined we had a unique opportunity. We learned the Japanese government and Japanese press were keenly interested in the topic of digital transformation—but no defense companies were talking about their expertise in this arena. At the same time, the company had just embarked on a digital transformation journey.

The Plan
We positioned the company as the defense leader in digital transformation by building a multi-channel communications strategy. Our approach showed how the products, capabilities and solutions on offer to Japan were part of a broader digital transformation story. We reinforced this story by selecting culturally appropriate imagery and text for a website and advertising campaign, targeted at key customers in the Japanese market.

The Outcome
The campaign generated extensive press coverage in the Japanese defense trade press. It was further aided by the decision to hold the defense industries first in-person press event in Japan since COVID-19 travel restrictions were lifted. We firmly established the company as a leader in digital transformation, as evidenced by the way the press framed stories about specific products.
